FunFam 3: Histidine ammonia-lyase

There are 3 EC terms in this cluster

Please note: EC annotations are assigned to the full protein sequence rather than individual protein domains. Since a given protein can contain multiple domains, it is possible that some of the annotations below come from additional domains that occur in the same protein, but have been classified elsewhere in CATH.

Note: The search results have been sorted with the annotations that are found most frequently at the top of the list. The results can be filtered by typing text into the search box at the top of the table.

EC Term Annotations Evidence
Histidine ammonia-lyase. [EC: 4.3.1.3]
L-histidine = urocanate + NH(3).
  • Member of the aromatic amino acid lyase family, other members of which are EC 4.3.1.23, EC 4.3.1.24 and EC 4.3.1.25.
  • Catalyzes the first step in the degradation of histidine and the product, urocanic acid, is further metabolized to glutamate.

    Tyrosine ammonia-lyase. [EC: 4.3.1.23]
    L-tyrosine = trans-p-hydroxycinnamate + ammonia.
    • Member of the aromatic amino acid lyase family, other members of which are EC 4.3.1.3, EC 4.3.1.24 and EC 4.3.1.25.
    • Far more active with tyrosine than with phenylalanine as substrate, but the substrate specificity can be switched by mutation of a single amino acid (H89F) in the enzyme from the bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides.
    • Formerly EC 4.3.1.5.
