Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Ribosomal protein S13/S18, C-terminal domain

This superfamily entry includes the C-terminal domain of the ribosomal protein S13, found in the small subunit (30S) of the ribosome. Its eukaryotic homologue is S18. In Escherichia coli, S13 is known to be involved in binding fMet-tRNA and, hence, in the initiation of translation. It is a basic protein that contains three helices and a beta-hairpin in the core of the protein, forming a helix-two turns-helix (H2TH) motif, and a non-globular C-terminal extension.
