Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Flavodoxin domain

This superfamily comprises structural domains with a flavodoxin-like fold, found in flavodoxins, FMN-dependent NADH-azo compound oxidoreductases, ribonucleotide reductase stimulatory proteins, glutathione-regulated potassium-efflux system ancillary protein KefG, N-terminal of the sulfite reductase (NADPH) flavoprotein alpha-component and the C-terminal of the anaerobic nitric oxide reductase flavorubredoxin.

The flavodoxin fold is characterised by an open twisted/alpha beta structure consisting of five parallel beta-sheets connected by alpha-helices which surround the sheet. Flavodoxins are electron-transfer proteins that function in various electron transport systems. They bind one FMN molecule, which serves as a redox-active prosthetic group and are functionally interchangeable with ferredoxins.
