Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Ribosomal protein L5

This superfamily includes the ribosomal protein L5 from the large subunit of the eubacterial, algal chloroplast, cyanelle, plant mitochondrial and archaebacterial ribosome. The entry also includes its homologues, mammalian L11, Tetrahymena thermophila L21, Dictyostelium discoideum (Slime mold) L5, Saccharomyces cerevisiae (Baker's yeast) L16 (39A). Members of the PFAM:UPF0201/DUF54 family are also predicted to be evolutionarily related to this superfamily.

The structural domain comprises five-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet and four alpha-helices, which fold in a way that is topologically similar to the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) domain. The molecule has a ribo-nucleoprotein (RNP) motif for RNA recognition.

In Escherichia coli, L5 is known to be involved in binding 5S RNA, forming a complex along with 2 other ribosomal proteins, L18 and L25. L5 is the primary 5S rRNA binding protein.
