Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Dynein motor C sequence, barrel region

Dyneins are microtubule-based AAA+ motor complexes that power ciliary beating, cell division, cell migration and intracellular transport. The motor domain comprises the AAA+ ring and three additional structural units: the linker, stalk/strut (both of which are major functional units of the heavy chain) and C sequence. The C sequence exists as a complex structure comprising six alpha-helices and an incomplete six-stranded antiparallel beta-barrel. The shape of the C sequence is distinctively flat, spreading over the alpha-submodules of AAA1, AAA5 and AAA6. This entry represents the barrel region of the C sequence PMID:22398446.
