Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Glycoside hydrolase family 11/12, catalytic domain

Glycoside hydrolases are ubiquitous enzymes involved in biochemical degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, the main constituents of plant cell walls PMID:15853815. A classification system for glycosyl hydrolases, based on sequence similarity, has led to the definition of 85 different families PMID:7624375,PMID:8535779. Glycoside hydrolase family 11 (GH11) comprises enzymes with only one known activity, xylanase, while family 12 (GH12) comprises enzymes with two known activities, endoglucanase and xyloglucan hydrolase.
