Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: DnaG, RNA polymerase domain, helical bundle

This superfamily comprises the C-terminal region, helical bundle (HB) domain of DNA primase DnaG mostly found in bacteria PMID:10741967,PMID:22795082. Primases synthesise short RNA strands on single-stranded DNA templates, thereby generating the hybrid duplexes required for the initiation of synthesis by DNA polymerases. In bacteria, a protein known as DnaG is responsible for catalysing primer synthesis during DNA replication PMID:22795082. Primases are recruited to single-stranded DNA by helicases - this domain binds DnaB-helicase PMID:10873470. It is associated with the Toprim domain PFAM:PF01751, INTERPRO:IPR006171, which is the central catalytic core.
