FunFam 372: Acyl-homoserine-lactone synthase

There are 1 EC terms in this cluster

Please note: EC annotations are assigned to the full protein sequence rather than individual protein domains. Since a given protein can contain multiple domains, it is possible that some of the annotations below come from additional domains that occur in the same protein, but have been classified elsewhere in CATH.

Note: The search results have been sorted with the annotations that are found most frequently at the top of the list. The results can be filtered by typing text into the search box at the top of the table.

EC Term Annotations Evidence
Acyl-homoserine-lactone synthase. [EC: 2.3.1.184]
An acyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] + S-adenosyl-L-methionine = [acyl-carrier- protein] + S-methyl-5'-thioadenosine + an N-acyl-L-homoserine lactone.
  • Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs) are produced by a number of bacterial species and are used by them to regulate the expression of virulence genes in a process known as quorum-sensing.
  • Each bacterial cell has a basal level of AHL and, once the population density reaches a critical level, it triggers AHL-signaling which, in turn, initiates the expression of particular virulence genes.
  • N-(3-oxohexanoyl)-[acyl-carrier-protein] and hexanoyl-[acyl-carrier- protein] are the best substrates.
  • The fatty-acyl substrate is derived from fatty-acid biosynthesis through acyl-[acyl-carrier-protein] rather than from fatty-acid degradation through acyl-CoA.
  • S-adenosyl-L-methionine cannot be replaced by methionine, S-adenosylhomocysteine, homoserine or homoserine lactone.
