FunFam 31: cholesterol 24-hydroxylase isoform X2

There are 1 EC terms in this cluster

Please note: EC annotations are assigned to the full protein sequence rather than individual protein domains. Since a given protein can contain multiple domains, it is possible that some of the annotations below come from additional domains that occur in the same protein, but have been classified elsewhere in CATH.

Note: The search results have been sorted with the annotations that are found most frequently at the top of the list. The results can be filtered by typing text into the search box at the top of the table.

EC Term Annotations Evidence
Cholesterol 24-hydroxylase. [EC: 1.14.14.25]
Cholesterol + [reduced NADPH--hemoprotein reductase] + O(2) = (24S)- cholest-5-ene-3-beta,24-diol + [oxidized NADPH--hemoprotein reductase] + H(2)O.
  • The enzyme can also produce 25-hydroxycholesterol.
  • In addition, it can further hydroxylate the product to 24,25- dihydroxycholesterol and 24,27-dihydroxycholesterol.
  • This reaction is the first step in the enzymic degradation of cholesterol in the brain as hydroxycholesterol can pass the blood- brain barrier whereas cholesterol cannot.
  • The direct electron donor to the enzyme is EC 1.6.2.4.
  • Formerly EC 1.14.13.98.
