Functional Families

Overview of the Structural Clusters (SC) and Functional Families within this CATH Superfamily. Clusters with a representative structure are represented by a filled circle.

Superfamily: Peroxisome assembly protein 22

This superfamily includes the peroxin-22, an integral peroxisomal membrane protein. The N-terminus of peroxin-22 is located in the matrix, while the C-terminus is located in the cytosol. Peroxin-22 interacts with the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme Pex4p, anchoring it at the peroxisomal membrane. Both proteins may act at the same step in peroxisome biogenesis. The presence of Pex22p may therefore allow for site-specific ubiquitination of the conserved cysteine, by correct positioning of Pex4p in relation to the exposed N-terminus of Pex5p.
