The name of this superfamily has been modified since the most recent official CATH+ release (v4_3_0). At the point of the last release, this superfamily was named:
"S11 has a distinctive protein architecture comprised of five beta sheets packed against two alpha helices, resembling the RRM RNA binding motif. Interestingly, S11 does not use the side of the beta sheet to contact RNA, as most RRM-containing proteins do, but uses the flat side of the antiparallel part of the beta sheet for its RNA interactions. Further contacts between S11 and rRNA are established via the 17 amino acid residue C-terminal tail of S11.
S11 plays an essential role in selecting the correct tRNA in protein biosynthesis. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, rpS14 is an essential protein necessary for the assembly of 40 S ribosomal subunits.
